The Business Response Network (BRN) is an online network of businesses that are helping emergency responders across the community, while receiving valuable information to help protect their own businesses during disasters. They are doing this by working with local and state agencies providing accurate updated information about critical resources to enable instant access to benefit emergency responders. In turn, participants can receive information updates to assist their business managers better prepare for continuity of operations.
The National Incident Management System (NIMS) requires that all planned resources be identified and organized using the approved NIMS Resource Typing Method. This method uses key attributes or descriptors for each type of resource to group the item into a NIMS approved category. This process requires in-depth knowledge of the resources being provided, as well as understanding of the NIMS specifications. The on-line system for the BRN uses a system called i-INFO which maintains a knowledgebase of terminologies and specifications for NIMS, NFPA and other recognized standards for resource identification. This standardized information is available to each BRN member organization to help them properly identify and categorize the resources being offered.

The BRN system supports over 75 approved categories of response and support vehicles for emergency use. Standards and attributes for each vehicle type allow emergency managers to quickly find the right type of vehicle to meet the immediate need.
